Palestine campaign groups select candidate to run against Hove MP

Tanushka Marah

A collection of pro-Palestine campaign groups and socialists have selected a Brighton theatre director to stand against Hove MP Peter Kyle in the next general election.

Brighton Queers for Palestine organised a hustings attended by 140 people from across Brighton and Hove, including members of Hove and Portslade socialists and other groups and individuals on Sunday.

After hearing from two potential candidates, they selected Tanushka Marah to stand, using her election campaign to call for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.

In January, Ms Marah helped organise a protest in Churchill Square calling for a ceasefire as part of a new group, Artist Action Brighton.

The British-born Palestinian-Jordanian activist has written several articles about Palestine for Middle East Eye.

She says she will also campaign against austerity and institutionalised racism and for a fully public health service, improved youth services, and rent controls to tackle the housing crisis.

She said: “I will devote myself to calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, ending the genocide, and an end to occupation.

“I want to be the suffragette who disrupts the race between Labour and Tory – the two war and austerity parties – and stays standing, able to walk forwards.”

The other candidate, activist Jasmine Reeve, said: “We all attended today because we want a better world, and we believe we all have a part to play in building it. Ultimately that change will come from the ground up.

“It will take everybody present today to build this movement effectively, but we have all the tools that we need. We can build networks of collective care and mutual aid that will improve material conditions for those struggling in our community while also working to stop state violence.

“We can now vote away from the two-party system and elect an activist who will act as part of the collective. “Having Tanushka elected as an MP would make a real difference to this community.

“Together we will now work towards our goal of collective liberation from state violence and through new ways of organising, centred around care and sustainability.”

It’s very strange. And quite why sexuality should have anything to do with the topic is bizarre in itself. Surely, they should wish to create the broadest umbrella of people to oppose the war instead of a tiny niche?

LGBT is illegal in Palestine, and is a criminal act. LGBT is however allowable in Israel. Israel is considered the most LGBT accepting country in the Middle East. They even hold a week long pride event in Israel.

This original comment is finding it strange to call this group “Queers for Palestine”, as it’s like Turkeys promoting Christmas and then being slaughtered for Christmas dinner.

No go back to the late 40s when 900,000 Jews were expelled from the ME countries they had inhabited for a thousand years or more. all their wealth and possessions stolen.
remember when Arab countries took 4,000 Arab refugees Israel took 200,000.
remember how many Arabs live in Israel. remember how many Arabs crossed the border from Gaza to work in Israel every day.
Hamas have been in power for 18 years. why is Gaza dependent on Israel for anything and everything, especially power? of course most of the tens of billions grant money to Gaza nestles in the bank accounts of hamas leaders and what doesn’t has been spent on tunnels and weapons. Answer? Hamas, ie.Iran, don’t give a fig for Gazans – they’re just pawns in the game. that’s why they’re used as human Shields, that’s why the hostages are in populated areas, that’s why the country has barely taken a forward step in 18 years.

    Top husting’s questions :

    1 – Is Palestine for Queers ?

2 – Do you support a prescibed group

3 – How did you fund your deposit

4 – Is Gaza really the most important issue facing the UK today.

      i. It’s a pity that Hove Resident hasn’t learnt to spell at his age. Hamas is a proscribed by the Tory government not prescribed by a doctor.
ii. Yes Palestine is for gay people. Why not?
iii. It’s no business of yours where the deposit comes from but if I were you, but fortunately I’m not, I’d be asking where the billions of COVID money has gone and why there was a VIP track for friends and cronies of Ministers not how £500 is going to be found.
iv. Gaza is very important because it symbolises the collapse of international law. It means might is right, which was the Nazi principle.

Once again, we have people standing in elections (like the Monster Raving Loony Lot who are at least a known total joke and act like it) on issues which have nothing whatsoever to do with B&H (unless our all-powerful council leader can stop the war with a grinning utterance, which I somehow doubt).

Release mechanisms for bombs that are being dropped in Gaza are produced and manufactured at Home Farm Business Park, Emblem House, Brighton and Hove, Brighton BN1 9HU. You don’t have to be a particular ethnic or religious group to care about a genocide but…. Brighton & Hove residents are Palestinian, Muslim, Jewish. The people currently representing Brighton & Hove in our governments aren’t listening to the huge population of us that don’t want bombs made in our name, they’re not calling for a ceasefire or offering support. We needs reps that stick up for the whole of Brighton & Hove.

So because it’s generally not safe to be gay in Gaza, it’s okay to bomb them? LGBTQ+ people do not have much freedom to express their sexuality in Gaza, but there are many thousands LGBTQ+ people there. Google “Queering the Map”, which shows the experiences of many people in Gaza. Yes, they are oppressed and suffer violence by Hamas, but they are also oppressed by Israel simply on virtue of being Palestinian, and they are currently being actively slaughtered by Israeli bombs. This is why an activist group such as Brighton Queers for Palestine is important. It’s about supporting our siblings in Gaza who are suffering and being killed while Israel uses a twisted logic of “liberating them”. You cannot liberate LGBTQ+ people by destroying their bodies, their homes, their schools, their hospitals, their entire cities with bombs. This isn’t a football match about choosing a side in higher politics (this government versus that government), it’s about our shared humanity and wanting genuine peace and justice for all. You can be against the genocide of Gaza, be an advocate for Palestinian human rights, and not support Hamas. These stances are not mutually exclusive.

The very well attended hustings was organised by former Labour cllrs Dave Hill, Anne Psaridou and David Maples from the trade union and socialist coalition. It was attended by members of many groups in the City including Stop the war, Bton+Hove Palestine solidarity campaign. Hove and Portslade socialist, XR, Parents for Palestine and several trade unionists. Also those expelled or resigned from the Labour party, QFP members and supporters and non aligned individuals. It was the widest range of members of our community gathered I have ever seen in my lifetime. Of course what Tanushka stands for is of importance to all in Hove and Portslade. She is anti austerity, pro saving our NHS, building houses and eliminating homelessness.Any of us with a scrap of humanity inside us are against the Genocide playing out on front of our eyes every day. The mass slaughter of children and women that makes us all weep and rage in turn. Kyle is fundrd by Israel and supports like his leader ‘Sir Kid Starver’ most if not all Tory policies. I would say to those who are rightly concerned about the hostages..ask Israel to release the many hundreds of Palestinian hostages they are holding under their administrative detention policy., many of these children and women. The sad fact is the IDF have killed many of Israelis themselves under their ‘Hannibal durective’, which means they kill them rather than allow them to be taken hostage. I can’t wait to start campaigning in the general election for Tanushka. We will give Kyle a good run for his (Zionist) money. He is what people call Sunak. “A waste man”. Don’t waste your vote on him. Former Labour cllr Sheila Hall

What can be influenced by an independent candidate is all the other candidates. Peter Kyle “supports” Israel unconditionally. The UK funds Israel and sends weapons. Sending weapons to a nation being investigated for war crimes is highly dodgy. Israel has violated 28 UN resolutions. This is before Oct 7th.
The whole point of this is that the UK is currently complicit in supporting a nation that has violated international law and being investigated by the ICJ for apartheid, ethnic cleansing, genocide….
It’s not just “some war” or “some conflict”
Hopefully the more independent candidates gain traction the more of the other candidates will rethink their stance. But sadly it seems Kyle has been bought by Labour friends of Israel

Nothing changes if a candidate supports, objects, or abstains. It’s an appeal to emotion at best, and I wouldn’t make it my primary reason for picking a candidate. Sure, a consideration, but campaigning on a load of platitudes doesn’t sway me much personally.

Fantastic news. I have been utterly horrified by Peter Kyle’s stance on this and we desperately need MPs who are listening to their constituents and who cannot be bought.
For those people who think that being gay is death sentence in Palestine you are wrong and you probably have a whole load of other misconceptions too.
Do look up Israeli historian Ilan Pappe for reference and understanding.
And for those who are asking about the Israeli hostages it’s important to know that all Palestinian support groups are also calling for their release too.
And for anyone who thinks that it’s not our business I say 1. That we are actually very much involved in this.
And 2. That Tanushka is firmly rooted here in the issues that face all of us.
She is highly compassionate, incredibly motivated and definitely ualified for this position! 👏🏽

Palestine has an atrocious record on LGBT rights. In 2021, the Williams Institute at the University of California, Los Angeles carried out a survey of 175 nations and their acceptance of gay and gender-non-conforming people.

Palestine was at number 130. Behind Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The “Queers for Palestine” would literally be better off in the notoriously homophobic petro-Kingdom of Saudi Arabia than in their favourite victim nation.

Gay in Gaza? Or The West Bank? Guess where most gay Palestinians want to go to? Israel – where they can be themselves in liberal cities such as Tel Aviv or Haifa. The very country that this group hates!
Or perhaps this group prefers gays in Gaza to be thrown off tall buildings & somehow blame Liberal Israel

You don’t have to approve of a culture and it’s ways to stand up for human rights. So there’s people in Gaza who would not approve of my life. I may not approve of some of their ways either. It’s not about finding friends it’s about standing up to oppression and genocide. I would also stand up against oppression of LGBTQ people anywhere in the world. This is such a strange point you are trying to make. “because some of them have horrible views on LGBTQ rights they don’t deserve to be stood up for? Is it the “Lets demonise them so we can dehumanise and not care if they are slaughtered” tactic so prevalent in Nazi Germany?

Standing up against genocide and calling out the corrupt political infrastructure that is complicit in the deaths of thousands is urgent both for those dying in this genocide and for UK citizens whose taxes are going to wars which prop up billionaires and corporations. The starting point is to stop spending money on war in the middle East, stop politicians serving the interests of the elite and stop our basic humanity eroding to the point we don’t care for one another or our fellow humans due to these sickening and outdated divide and Conquer and racist narratives. Palestine is just a tipping point, a few more years and the climate will collapse…what will the point of all this greed and war be then?

Quite right!! Palestine has everything to do with us as the UK and it’s MPs are supporting this genocide. There are many causes around the world that deserve our humanity. Too many for fight for them all. However the importance in this fight is that the UK sells arms to a nation being investigated for ethnic cleansing, apartheid and genocide. The more people like Morah who take a stand the more candidates across the country are forced to take a stand on the topic. Peter Kyle literally just said “It’s complicated” when challenged. If he really thinks it’s complicated he clearly has no depth of knowledge on the middle east for the last 100 years and certainly not currently.

Excellent candidate who stands up for the majority of British people who oppose genocide in Palestine and the UK/US governments support for the mass slaughter of civilians and the destruction of hospitals, schools, universities and civilian infrastructure in Gaza.

Israel isn’t quite the beacon of tolerance when it comes to gay rights. Its government includes Noam, an virulently anti-gay party and Finance Minister and the man in charge of the West Bank ‘civil’ administration Bezalel Smotrich describes himself as a ‘proud homophobe’.

Today the priority in Gaza is minor matters such as preventing children dying of starvation so we’ll treat the pinkwashing above with the contempt it deserves.

The whole reason she is standing as an alternative to Peter Kyle is because he supports the genocide in Gaza. A genocide the UK is funding with the support of many politicians. You speak as if the UK potentially breaking international law and being involved in war crimes and ethnic cleansing isn’t a big deal. Go vote for Peter Kyle then. Like I said; an issue that engages a typically unpolitical demographic. It historically gives rise to some quite leftfield politics. Trump is probably one of the most recent examples of galvanisation of an unpolitical group. Something to think about at least.

It’s good to have a stance on a issue, but also to realise that one has very little influence to do anything about this particular one. And if it is the overriding issue amongst everything else, that gives a very imbalanced candidate. Take Izzard for example. I could not tell you want any of Izzard’s politics where because of that one controversial aspect. That made Izzard a very unelectable candidate, for me.

            Same logic applies here.

I’ll spell it out for you as you clearly haven’t engaged in the topic. Peter Kyle supports Israel unconditionally and supports the genocide in Gaza. What Morah intends to do is literally raise awareness of this. Raise awareness that many of our politicians unconditionally support Israel no matter what choices Israel makes. The ICJ is currently investigating some very serious allegations about Israel including genocidal war crimes. As the UK is funding this war and selling arms to Israel the UK could also be found complicit in breaking international law. In an election the public need an option, someone standing who will speak up against war crimes. If anything it could bring this topic to Peter Kyles doorstep and make him reconsider supporting genocide. But I doubt that he’s been bought by Labour friends of Israel.

But the way she’s raising awareness is to demonstrate that she is the only candidate opposed to funding genocide. It’s not even about winning it’s about highlighting that Peter Kyle has been bought by Labour friends of Israel. I would hope that is Morah gains in popularity then Kyle will snap out of his complicity and grow some balls.

A candidate that isn’t focused on winning? Isn’t that pretty damning as a selection?

I’m not convinced “it’s not about winning, it is about sending a message” is the best stance to take here.

Where is Brighton Queers for Afghan women ? How about Brighton Queers for the kidnapped girl victims of Boko Haram ? Where are Brighton Queers for Yemenis ? ISIS caliphates? The list goes on.
Nowhere to be seen because it does not involve Israel.
Please explain why you choose to ignore Muslim victims of Islamist organisations but when Israel reacts to a planned mass attack on its citizens you get all motivated.
If you had a long history of protests against Islamist oppression against Muslim populations in Muslim states you would have credibility, but no, you look like opportunistic wannabes who are jumping on the age old anti-Jewish bandwagon to forment trouble and what you see as a chance to “sock it to the man”.
And quite frankly you are choosing to support an ideal that is really not friendly to queers.

Chris. Our government and our MPs have stood up against all the other atrocities you speak of. This is the very point Morah is taking with her stand. It is possible to be horrified by the attacks by Hamas and still condemn Israel. Yet Peter Kyle does not. The UK funds Israel and sends arms to Israel. Weapons used not just to flatten Gaza but protect Illegal settlements in the West Bank. With the IDF having “detained” thousands of Palestinians (many Children) without cause or charge. The UK is complicit in what the ICJ is now investigating. The Hove public don’t have to be complicit in this. Yes it’s a protests stance against Israel but far more a protest about Peter Kyle’s unconditional support for genocide.

No one cares about normal muslim women being subjugated and abused by muslim men. Only trans or if Jewish people are involved.

Of course they care..BUT the UK is supporting and funding these things. The UK is complicit in supporting and funding the IDF to carry out acts being investigated as war crimes. Peter Kyle fully supports this Genocide. THIS is the point here. Our taxes are funding this.

Well said Chris. It is Israel that is bombing Gaza but Jews around the world are being demonized. My Jewish friends condemn Netanhayu and say he must be replaced.
Even before this Hamas attack Jews in England live in fear of percecution . I have been to non political Jewish events and even today in 2024 cannot risk advertising they are on because the hate brigade will show up to disrupt them.
My experiences with Jews are full of admiration and respect for their close communities. Yes, they stick together because no one else will as is shown by the hatred for them by pro Palestine groups. This has gone on for centuries and will never end until people listen and learn. Oh, and I am not Jewish in case you are wondering.

I am Jewish and have been on many of the demonstrations I’ve experienced no hatred from “Pro-Palestinians” at any point and that would be because I do not support Zionist ethnic cleansing. So friend please keep your “My experience with Jews” comments out of this. Speak from your own heart and leave us Jews to speak from ours.

So are you suggesting we should have no humanity and allow UK to fund a genocide? Based on the concept that the Palestinians are somehow unworthy?

Nice day out for the sock puppets that we see on any article about Gaza, a couple of people posting under multiple names to try and make their cause look like it is supported by the wider public.

well the largest repeated public demonstrations in years might demonstrate that it is supported by the wider public and the ICJ cases brought by a multitude of nations shows that it’s worldwide.

Finally… a candidate who is listening to the needs for people. Our youth services have been decimated! People are suffering, we need an alternative choice, and someome willing to take a stand in spite of those with loud voices who try to make 30,000 dead humans seem like a controversial and unreasonable thing to be against… Go Tanushka!

Yes, well said Chris, I know of hundreds of Christians being rounded up in Nigeria, shot or beheaded by the Boko Haram, another group similar to Hamas, then there’s ISIS, the rebels in Yemen and what’s going on in Sudan is truly awful. These all have Islam as their religion. Also if you remember the World Cup there was demonstrations by gay people about their rights in an Islamic state. Sorry it has to be said gays, transgender etc people will be beheaded under Islamic rule. Hence Turkeys voting for Christmas. Learn your history, and not from people who are rewriting history. Also, where is the only gay pride event in the Middle East? It’s in Tel-Aviv in Israel!

So are you saying because there are some horrible terrorist and leaders in this part of the world that the civilian population does not deserve protection from genocide? Israel may have a better track record with LGBTQ rights and even women’s rights. But their treatment of Palestinians is beyond barbaric.

As a gay man, I certainly find the concept of ‘Queers For Palestine’ as problematic.

For sure we would all like to see a ceasefire and an eventual peaceful solution, but if the Queers for Palestine lot got to meet with Hamas then they wouldn’t last long.

The irony is that, after all the bombing in Gaza, there probably aren’t many tall buildings left they could throw us off.
(With all the rubble on the ground, stoning us to death will probably make a comeback. )

My recommendation is that you don’t lose your heads over this divisive debate.

It’s also crucial to address misconceptions (aka Israel’s propaganda pinkwashing) perpetuated in some comments regarding the safety of LGBTQ+ individuals in Gaza. Read, learn perhaps:

      https://www.thenation.com/article/world/gaza-queering-the-map/

Regardless of what you may think of LGBTQ+ safety in Gaza, it’s a non issue against the systematic slaughter and starvation facing ALL Gazans at the hand of their oppressors.

It takes a good, brave person to stand up and fight for the most marginalised people in society.

By advocating for Palestinian rights, she brings attention to the interconnectedness of social justice issues which I think demonstrates how she can positively influence local policies and inclusivity efforts.

It isn’t a group I would vote for personally, but I do support that they are going about this in a responsible and correct way, by using democracy in exactly the way it should be used.

I am slightly unsure about the Pro-Palestine description in the headline, because all I can see here is a very humane call for ceasefire in Gaza, which is not the same thing as taking sides. Frankly, in my opinion, Hamas and Netanyahu are as bad as each other, and innocent general population on each side are not ultimately to blame for the actions of their leaders. I wish there was more commonplace separation between the ordinary innocent people on both sides and the evil politicians that use innocent people as cannon-fodder.

I hope just for peace and resolution, the same as most, and I have no support for the leaders of either side for the evil they are inflicting on ordinary people, Hamas included.

Someone who hates will never bring peace to Brighton and Hove but only make more division and ostracism. You can’t pretend Hamas doesn’t exist and claim it’s the fault of evil Zionists (read Jews) and that’s what Tanushka does. A mature person sees the complexity of the situation and wants Palestinians to have decent life and this is not going to happen with Hamas. Tanushka and her Palestinian Campaign Groups glorify Hamas, prescribed terrorist group which is afflicted with Muslim Brotherhood which is definitely not the way to peace but more violence. I can’t see Brighton and Hove flourishing with denial and ostracism.
