A road in Hove has been closed by Sussex Police as a fire crew returned to the scene of a blaze this morning (Tuesday 24 October).
Unconfirmed reports suggest that the woman who was rescued from the burning flat has since died.
The fire broke out in one of the flats this morning at about 5am with six fire engines sent to tackle the blaze.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Damage to the three-storey building was clearly visible and the structure was later assessed to be unsafe.
Firefighters are understood to be removing a window as they work on making safe the early 1960s building safe which houses Hangleton Library.
The road closure this evening has led to traffic, including buses, being diverted while work is under way to remove a window damaged in the blaze.
West Way is closed between Poplar Avenue and Dale View while the work is carried out at the flats in Kingston Close.
This morning, the fire service said: “East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, with the assistance of crews from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, were called at 5.01am today to an incident at Kingston Close, Hove.
“Six appliances were in attendance at the height of the incident and one female was rescued from a block of flats and passed into the care on the ambulance service.
“The Red Cross were on the scene to provide support.
“The area is cordoned off and a fire investigation will be done in due course.”
West Way and Kingston Close were also cordoned off and closed to traffic this morning.
