Real Patisserie to open cafe in former public loos

Real Patisserie is planning on opening a bakery in a former toilet block in Queen’s Park.

The Brighton chain wants to open the small cafe under its new brand, the Open Bakery.

The block was advertised for let in September last year, when estate agents Avison Young said about 40 people, mostly caterers, had expressed an interest.

This month, Real Patisserie applied for permission for a change of use from public toilet to cafe/bakery.

In its application, the company said: “The Open Bakery Queen’s Park would prepare a selected range of our high-quality pastries and bread on site, to service the Queen’s Park and Hanover area.

“The bakery would house a small bread and pastry oven. We would have a small terrace seating area on the decking illustrated.

“The plans incorporate an arrangement of frosted glass wall blocks – added for practical and aesthetic reasons.

“They are extremely tough to safeguard against vandalism while allowing more light to the premises and adding a lightness to the structure of the building which is otherwise very concrete.

“We also thought this was a respectful, yet tasteful nod to its original purpose.

“We are committed to making the building as attractive and fitting as possible in the park setting.”

The proposed trading hours are 7.30am to 5pm from Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sunday.

The cafe would employ just one member of staff.

Thanks so much for this article, and lovely to see interest in the new venture!
We’re very excited about it, the main purpose to get Open Bakery bread to all the people of Hanover and Queen’s Park.
Of course all bread and pastries will either be baked right there on site or coming straight up from the ovens at the Open Bakery in Kemp Town.
People may be interested to know that Open Bakery is a separate venture to Real Patisserie Ltd, run as an independently creative bakery and cookery school – hence the change of name form Real Patisserie Kemp Town Ltd to Open Bakery, so customers know to expect different products.
We hope to open mid to late summer.
And two people will be working there, too much work for one! Unless you can bake and serve at the same time, in which case please apply here!
Look forward to seeing you soon!
    Justin, Open Bakery.
