The developers behind plans to build an open air swimming pool on Brighton seafront say they want to go back to their original plan for a 50m pool.
Plans for a 50m pool at the former Peter Pan’s playground site were first announced in 2015, but after uncertainty over the Madeira Terraces restoration, developers Sea Lanes scaled their plans back.
In 2017, they announced they would instead seek to build a temporary, 25m pool to test the waters for a larger pool – a scheme which was given a five-year planning permission in April this year.
But today, Sea Lanes has announced it will be seeking to build a 50m pool on the Madeira Drive site after all – and if given permission, open next year.
The company says it has decided to bring forward the large pool plans after customers at its summer pop up on the site. If it fails to get permission for a 50m pool, it says it will reconsider its options.
Joe McNulty, Director at Sea Lanes Brighton said: “We are so grateful to the Brighton community for embracing Sea Lanes Brighton and the Summer Pop Up activity.
“We have been able to gain a better understanding of the local appetite for future water based activities and want to bring forward the opening of the 50m pool by five years to fulfil the needs of the Brighton people.”
Joe McNulty, Director at Sea Lanes Brighton said: “Currently the nearest 50m pool to Brighton is over 20 miles away and we want to change this.
“We are working closely with Brighton and Hove City Council to revise the plans so we can begin the transformation of the seafront and provide much needed swimming facilities for the local community.”
The scheme approved in April also included 39 small business units, and as well as yoga and guided sea swims, last summer’s pop up was home to local businesses The Body Hub Brighton, About Balance, Bison Beer and Brighton Beachbox.
