The volunteer Brighton lifeboat crew joined an extensive search for a man who was reported to have gone into the sea in Hove late last night (Monday 2 December).
They were joined by fellow volunteers from the RNLI in Shoreham, as well as the coastguard, with support from a helicopter.
But more than two hours later the search was ended with no sign of the missing man.
Roger Cohen, Brighton lifeboat operations manager, said: “A man was seen to enter the water at Hove Lawns at around 11.30pm.
“Volunteer crews from Brighton lifeboat and Shoreham lifeboat were launched and then we were joined by volunteer coastguard teams from Newhaven and Shoreham and then by a coastguard helicopter from Portsmouth.
“An extensive search was made of the area between Brighton Marina and Carat’s café but nothing was found.
“It was an extensive search of the area by air, sea and land.
“We were all stood down at around 2am.
“Anyone with any concerns about a missing relative or friend should contact Sussex Police.”
