I suppose that I should elaborate. It’s regarding the welcome return of the charismatic Hands Off Gretel to the city, who last performed here in April at the Hope & Ruin. The Brighton & Hove News Music Team were present on that night and you can read our report HERE.
Hands Off Gretel formed in South Yorkshire four years ago when the then 16-year-old self-confessed misfit front woman Lauren Tate stuck two-fingers up to the repressive school environment that trapped her and dropped out and collected like-minded individuals (Becky, Sean and Sam) to join in her quest. Inspired by Hole, The Distillers, Nirvana and PJ Harvey, Hands Off Gretel quickly set about creating the perfect soundtrack of sugar-coated grunge-punk for Lauren to vent and rail against the issues of body image, mental health, celebrity, childhood and loneliness she felt enraged by, all of which were addressed from a fiercely female, unapologetic, feminist perspective.
Wind the clock forward to 29th March this year and Hands Off Gretel unleashed the exciting twelve-track ‘I Want The World’ album via the band’s own label Puke Pop Records. Contained within are highly addictive, and sometimes vindictive, melodic rock that is unafraid to blend the heavy screeching distortion of grunge rock with the catchy hooks of bubblegum pop, whilst keeping true to their original roots in punk rock. All merch is skillfully designed by Lauren, who is certainly not one for shying away from happy bright colours. She also pens all of the bands lyrics.
The band have self released four singles from the record ‘I Want The World’, ‘S.A.S.S’ , ‘Kiss Me Girl’, and latest offering ‘Freaks Like Us’.
Hands Off Gretel are a visually stunning band and a photographers dream, and so it comes as no surprise to learn that they have already performed at several major festivals including Download, Isle of Wight, Rebellion main stage, Camden Rocks Festival, Great British Alternative Festival and headlined Loud Women Festival in London. The band has also toured Germany and the Netherlands.
