Taking place in the Spiegeltent’s Bosco Tent, Pamela’s Palace was an evening of belly laughs in this interactive comedy set in a beauty salon.
Set in Pamela’s Palace, owned by the larger than life big haired Pamela Jones, her ambition is to re-win stylist of the year. She is awaiting the arrival of a mystery judge for the Salon of the Year competition’s final. She has spruced up her Grecian styled salon complete with pillars ivy and grapes, it’s kitsch and camp.
It’s fast paced, in your face and hilarious. Pamela’s two salon juniors complement Pamela’s drama queen persona brilliantly. Bronwyn Mill, with her copious under arm hair is dry and geeky cool. The brash Senior stylist, Tiffany Rose, pouts and struts her stuff whilst arguing with her boyfriend, Dante Alicante on the phone, is superbly played by Katie Grace Cooper. Tiffany tells us how she met Dante at a petrol station which then leads into a hilarious routine with an audience member and a box of tampons. Audience interaction onstage fitted seamlessly into the show as the audience were made to feel comfortable right from the start with people keen to get on stage (for a change) to be the ‘model’ star of the show.
The costumes add to all the fabulousness. The intricately choreographed dance and fight routines were superb as were all three performers comic timing and improvisation skills. Their very different characters bounce off each other brilliantly as they explore beauty, ageing, friendship and HAIR! I hate going to the hairdressers personally but this was an utter treat throughout. Physical comedy at its best.
Pamela’s Palace was written and devised by Donna Gray, Katie Grace Cooper and Ayesha Tansey and Directed by Mella Faye and supported by Interactive Theatre International.
