An alleyway in The Lanes has been cordoned off this morning after a woman was raped there in the early hours of the morning.
Crimescene tape has been put up next to Cafe Marwood in Ship Street while forensics officers comb the area. Meanwhile, the cafe is closed.
Police say the suspect is believed to be known to the victim.
Detective Sergeant Leon Ryan said: “Our enquiries are at an early stage and we are still trying to establish the full circumstances. Forensic tests have been taking place and this has necessitated the temporary closure of Ship Street.
“This appears to be an isolated incident.”
Cafe Marwood posted on its Facebook page: “To those who have been confused by our unexpected closure this morning, we are only closed for now as we help police with an investigation unrelated to our business.
“Thanks to those who sent messages of concern, all staff are absolutely okay and will let you know when we reopen.”
