Brighton & Hove Albion 0 Liverpool 1
Albion narrowly lost to Premier League leaders Liverpool after Mohammed Salah converted a 50th-minute penalty after Pascal Gross was adjudged to have brought the Egyptian striker down in the penalty area.
During a first half of few chances – aside from a Xherdan Shaqiri header which flew wide – Albion, with an outlet to Jurgen Locadia, fairly matched the Reds
And even after Liverpool’s opener, Gross had a great chance to equalise for Albion but his side-footed effort was charged down by Virgil Van Dyke.
As the game wore on Albion were subject to some bizarre decisions from referee Kevin Friend. Clear fouls on Davy Propper and Locadia by Van Dyke and Jordan Henderson went unpunished and seemingly obvious corner decisions – as Florin Andone challenged – went the other way.
Albion’s best effort was a 20-yard drive from Locadia, which Allison pushed around his post.
Towards the end David Button made good saves from Salah again and Firmino.
Liverpool, especially Allison, resorted to time-wasting towards the end but Liverpool held on for the win.
