Right then, got your calendars ready, then it seems a prudent idea to block off the evening of Saturday 23rd February 2019 and write/tap in The Hope & Ruin, Brighton The Cult of Dom Keller and Black Doldrums – there you go – sorted!
Since 2008 The Cult of Dom Keller who are Ryan (lead guitar/vocals/keys), Neil (synthesiser/vocals/tambourine), Jason (guitar/keys/backing vocals), Liam (bass) and Al (drums/samplers) have toured Europe and USA and played festivals such as Kozfest, Liverpool International Festival of Psychedelia, Raw Power festival in London and Austin Psych Fest, Texas as well as Rewire in Holland and Fuzz Club festival, Eindhoven and have established a loyal, cult following that seems to grow and grow.
“Dom Keller sound like they’ve fallen from the back of Ken Kesey’s legendary LSD loaded magic bus, down ‘n’ dirty slabs of fried freak beat are sumptuously decoded within a swamp infested heavy beatnik chassis, part acid laced shade wearing psyche and part heavy stoner goo, a wasted baby laced with hazy 60’s sourced keys and looping gridlocked riffs of mind expanding proportions; a blissed out frenzied fuzz laced tripping haze and bone rattling f**k you,a bludgeoned blues bastardisation spewed out by a tranced out Brian Jonestown Massacre amid an impenetrably squalling sonic wall feedback fisticuffs with a volatile 13th Floor Elevators”
“The only cult worth joining. Psychedelic tinnitus inducing, world shaking sounds from a world where death and drugs and darkness are the only glimmer of light!” – Sounds very much like the effect of watching the later episodes of ‘The Prisoner’ 1960’s tv show to me and so very much looking forward to seeing these guys play live. Right then, where’s my ‘Prisoner’ box set gone………. – Ed.

Black Doldrums who are a male-female couple combo of singer-guitarist Kevin Gibbard and dark haired drummer Sophia Lacroix. These guys are renowned for delivering multiple layers of echo-drenched guitar and heavy relentless drums and thus creating their powerfully distorted transient and euphoric dark-psych, shoegaze sounds akin to Moon Duo, The Jesus & Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine and Brighton’s lost band Morning Smoke.
Their single ‘Those With A Rope Around Their Neck (Don’t Always Hang)’ backed with ‘Exit City Lights’ saw the light of day last April. Their new ‘Sad Paradise’ EP was released on Club AC30 on limited edition 12″ Black and Purple Splatter Vinyl on 30th November!
The band is influenced by much of the proto-psych of the1960s, icy post-punk of the 80’s and the Brit Rock swagger of the 90’s, taking their name from Allen Ginsberg’s ‘Denver Doldrums’ and their gothic-psych aesthetic, charmed from Syd Barrett’s ‘Madcap’ era.
