A man has been arrested in Hove after a stand-off with police which lasted for almost seven hours.
The 46-year-old was held on suspicion of making threats to kill in Portland Road.
The road was shut by Sussex Police at about 8am, with armed officers standing by.
Bus services and other traffic had to be diverted to surrounding streets.
Sussex Police said this afternoon (Friday 7 December): “A man has been arrested following a seven-hour stand-off in Hove.
“Police have attended an address in Portland Road in Hove at around 8am on Friday morning after concerns for a man in a property.
“The man has thrown items from the window and was making threats.
“Around 2.45pm a 46-year-old was arrested on suspicion of threats to kill and is now in custody.
“Members of the public are thanked for their patience and co-operation.”
I was astonished to see one geezer remonstrate with a policewoman to be allowed to walk along the sidewalk beyond the taped-off section instead of taking a diversion. He would have been the first to complain – if he could do so – had something landed on his head or the man in the flat proved to be a killer. The policewoman was excellently cool – and then rewarded herself with a sustaining bar of chocolate. Well done.
