On Friday 12th October, electronics guru James Holden will transport the audience at the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts into a magical world of instinct and intuition with his set of synth-led folk-trance standards from his bold newly-expanded band James Holden & The Animal Spirits.
A wild ride that unites the characteristic propulsive melodic vigour of his custom-made modular synthesizer system with an unlikely supporting cast of brass, wind and live percussion, the expansive and transformative psychedelic journey of The Animal Spirits is certainly Holden’s most ambitious work to date – but surely also his most direct and accessible.
Born out of the sheer joy of live performance, Holden’s third album ‘The Animal Spirits’ is the culmination of a transformation, as the former trailblazer of early-noughties computer music is reborn as a live musician and band leader. This one-time international DJ has now officially hung up his headphones in order to turn his attention to interconnected live electronic performance, as he gears up to take his new five-piece musical collective out on the road this autumn.

Support on the night will come from Free Love Devotional Ceremony.
Free Love, last seen in Brighton at the Great Escape in May, is the latest manifestation of Scottish duo Suzanne Rodden and Lewis Cook (FKA Happy Meals) – a continuation and progression of their utopian dance pop experiments released on Night School Records and Optimo which have seen them nominated for Scottish Album of the Year and performing across the globe.
Touring across Europe supporting Liars and The Flaming Lips, and with festival shows as far as Austin, Moscow and Bangalore, the band have become notorious for their sensual live ceremonies. Using a table of all-hardware electronics, Free Love harness a charismatic chaos and unpredictable energy that sets them apart as one of the most exciting artists of 2018.
