Six months of roadworks on the Lewes Road as part of the University of Brighton’s new Preston Barracks development will start on Monday.
New junctions, pedestrian crossings and improved cycle lanes are to be added to a section of the Lewes Road from the Queensdown School Road junction
down to just before Coombe Road junction in several phases of work.
All work, which will be carried out in stages, will take place on the road itself and any changes to pedestrian crossings and walkways will be signposted.
Sarah Chitty from developers U+I said: “We’re working with Brighton & Hove City Council, local businesses and residents to make sure there’s minimal disruption during this essential work. Your safety is our priority so please take care and follow the safe routes provided.”
The development, which straddles the Lewes Road, includes 369 new homes, incorporating affordable housing, and 1,338 purpose built student bedrooms in managed halls of residence, to address the large shortfall of managed student accommodation in the area.
They also include a new home for the University’s Business School and the Central Research Laboratory, a project supported with grant funding from Coast to Capital, the Local Enterprise Partnership, which will create hundreds of new jobs.
