A Brighton University payroll manager is due to stand trial today charged with the murder of his boss Jillian Howell.
David Browning, 52, denies murdering the 46-year-old at her home in Sandgate Road, in the Fiveways area of Brighton, last October.
But Browning, of Willow Drive, Seaford, admits manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
He is also accused of having a lock knife which he is believed to have used to stab Miss Howell.
Browning is due to appear before Judge Christine Laing at Hove Crown Court this morning (Monday 23 April).
In a tribute her family said: “Jill was a kind, gentle and loving sister, aunty and friend.
“We are shocked and heartbroken by her loss.
“She touched many lives in her volunteer work with the Samaritans and was always helping others.
“She loved to travel and was a passionate Albion fan and season ticket holder.
“She lived life to the fullest and was dearly loved by her friends and family.”
