There was little rush evident in the rush hour along the A27 Brighton bypass this morning (Thursday 22 February) after a problem with traffic lights led to a six-mile queue.
Sussex Police officers stepped in to direct the traffic at the Ashcombe roundabout on the edge of Lewes after the phasing started letting just a few eastbound vehicles at a time.
At one point drivers travelling from Brighton and Hove were being warned that journey could take two hours.
The queue started in Hangleton, with some drivers heading via Clayton where temporary traffic lights made the alternative route slow too.
Likewise there were long queues over Ditchling Beacon.
The knock-on effects were felt elsewhere too, with drivers heading towards Newhaven along the A259 coast road queuing from Roedean.
At one point a broken down car added to the delays.
And the queue heading south to the traffic lights in Rottingdean High Street was longer than usual.
It is not the first time this week that there have been severe delays along the bypass.
