An arsonist set light to a flat in the centre of Brighton posting burning paper through the letterbox shortly after 4am today (Friday 26 January).
Sussex Police said: “Police are appealing for witnesses following a small fire in a flat in Brighton in the early hours.
“The fire was spotted at around 4.20am in a flat in St Peter’s Street and it is believed a lit piece of paper was pushed through the letterbox.”
Detective Sergeant Joe Jardine said: “Luckily the home owner woke up when he heard the smoke alarm and was able to quickly put the flames out without causing any injuries to himself.
“We are treating this as arson with intent and are investigating.
“We have not received any other reports of this nature.”
Sussex Police added: “If you noticed anyone acting suspiciously in the area at this time please report online or call 101 quoting reference 102 of 26/01.”
