A man has appeared before Brighton magistrates charged with the Fiveways murder this morning (Monday 30 October).
David Browning, 51, spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.
He was charged with murder and having a lock knife which is believed to have been used in the murder of 46-year-old Jillian Howell at her home in Sandgate Road in the Fiveways area of Brighton.
Browning, a payroll officer, of Willow Drive, Seaford, was remanded in custody to appear at Lewes Crown Court at 9am tomorrow (Tuesday 31 October).
Jill Howell is believed to have been killed on Wednesday night (25 October) or Thursday morning last week.
Members of Miss Howell’s family were at court along with officers from Sussex Police.
In a tribute last week her family said: “Jill was a kind, gentle and loving sister, aunty and friend.
“We are shocked and heartbroken by her loss.
“She touched many lives in her volunteer work with the Samaritans and was always helping others.
“She loved to travel and was a passionate Albion fan and season ticket holder.
“She lived life to the fullest and was dearly loved by her friends and family.”
