The A27 has reopened this morning (Friday 26 May) after a fire yesterday at the recycling plant at Southerham on the edge of Lewes.
Clouds of smoke drifted across Brighton and Hove after the fire broke out at about 7pm yesterday evening.
Sussex Police said this morning: “The A27 has reopened at Lewes following Thursday night’s big fire in a recycling centre on the southern outskirts of the town.
“The road was opened to traffic at 7.15am. Drivers are advised to keep windows closed while passing the scene as there is still some smoke, although considerably lighter, coming from the site.
“Traffic is already building up on alternative routes and police have asked travellers to be patient and to allow extra time for their journeys.
“East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has advised people living downwind of the fire to keep doors and windows closed as a precaution if they are aware of smoke.
“But it is significantly reduced from the thick black plume of smoke that arose from the fire on Thursday night.”
East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service said: “Crews have worked tirelessly throughout the night after being called to a fire involving 200 tonnes of scrap metal.
“While the incident is ongoing it has now been scaled back to five appliances.
“East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service have this morning met with Sussex Police and the Highways Agency and it has been confirmed that the A27 closure between Beddingham roundabout and Southerham roundabout will be lifted at 7am this morning.
“Again, members of the public in the area are reminded to keep doors and windows closed if they can smell smoke.”
What a pxsspoor bit of ‘journalism’ this is really. Poor quote from the Fire service, no detailed description of the site, it’s purpose, no quote from owners, why specifically the smoke might be dangerous. No background material on certain type of materials being illegal to burn. Did you just get this from a press release? Pic from the Fire Officer, where’s yours?
