Police have named the local man who died in a hit and run collision in Brighton as Jonos Sasvari, 78.
He was known as John, or Hungarian John, and lived in Little Preston Street, Brighton. He died after he was hit by a car on the corner of Old Steine and St James’s Street during a police chase at about 10pm on Tuesday night (10 January).
Two men, a 33-year-old and a 35-year-old, handed themselves in to police on Wednesday (11 January), the day after the chase and collision.
Both men were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, drink driving, failing to stop for police and failing to report an accident.
They were released on bail until Monday 27 February while investigations continue.
In a statement about Mr Sasvari, Sussex Police said today (Friday 13 January): “Although no next of kin have been traced in the UK, officers are still working to trace if he had any family members elsewhere.”
Sergeant Richard Hornsey said: “This is a tragic incident and our thoughts are with the friends and all those who knew John in the city.
