The first door opened on the Beach Hut Advent Calendar on Hove seafront this evening (Thursday 1 December).
Well over a hundred people crowded rounded hut 348 for mince pies, chocolate – Divine chocolate, of course – and carols.
Once in Royal David’s City, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing and a rousing O, Come All Ye Faithful rang out on a fresh still night.
The first night of what has become a much-loved annual event was hosted by the King’s School, with year 7 pupils creating angel-themed nativity scene in the hut.
On Sunday (4 December), listen out for the sound of the Robbie Williams song, Angels, also in keeping with this year’s angels theme – if not very religious.
The Beach Hut Advent Calendar is organised by Beyond Church which aims to help people to a deeper understanding of spirituality through the arts and other creative activities and explore non-traditional ways of being Christian.
The Rev Martin Poole, vicar of St Luke’s Prestonville, who started the Beach Hut Advent Calendar, said that it wasn’t preachy.
But he hoped that people would enjoy each evening’s advent event and hopefully learn a little bit more about the Christmas story.
Mr Poole spoke about the lead up to Christmas recently on The Vote on Latest TV.
