Dukes Mound on Brighton seafront is to be closed for around three months for essential structural repairs to the high retaining wall which supports the A259 seafront road above.
It will close on Monday 21 November and is scheduled to reopen on 3 February 2017. In consultation with traders, the downhill side of Dukes Mound will reopen at weekends (Friday evening until Monday morning). The road will also be opened over the Christmas period – between Tuesday 20 December and 4 January.
The closure has been planned to avoid conflicting with any events on Madeira Drive.
Council officials met with businesses to discuss ways to minimise impact on their activities.
Works form part of a council programme of improvements to the seafront which is estimated to require £100m of repairs.
Dukes Mound is a sloping road near Brighton Marina linking the A259 with Madeira Drive at beach level.
Chair of the council’s environment, transport and sustainability committee Cllr Gill Mitchell said: “This is another example of us working hard to protect and improve the seafront. Between the piers we’re rebuilding the historic fishermen’s arches and Shelter Hall, strengthening the seafront road and are about to undertake major landscaping improvements on the lower prom.”
Where is the money coming from and how much?
So to access the seafront, Yellow Wave and the playground with a buggy (or wheelchair) from Kemp Town we’ll have to walk to the pier or marina for step free access. Brilliant!
So glad to see that this is getting done – such an important wall! I’m sure wheelchair & pram users will happily access Madeira Drive in these cold winter months by way of the Pier or Marina end. Far better to walk a little out of the way then have a block of concrete fall their heads!
Of course Jacqueline. Perhaps they hoped it would fall on their heads and generate a claim.
It seems some people just don’t realise that walls, roads, paths etc. need maintenance from time to time.
I love the smooth ride down North Street on the bus these days, forgetting it was dug up for about 6 months 10 years ago to replace the water mains.
