Customers were evacuated from a popular waterfront pub after a fire started in the kitchen this evening (Friday 21 October).
Three fire engines tackled the blaze at the Schooner Inn, in Albion Street, Southwick, which overlooks Shoreham Harbour.
One customer, David Croydon, from Hove, said: “We were having dinner about 6.30pm and were told we had to leave.
“Apparently the griddle caught fire and then the exit fan in the roof. And then the roof.
“Three fire engines turned up and put it out with foam. I would guess the top accommodation where the owners live will be damaged and the pub will be out of action for a while. Pity – the food was very nice.”
The fire service said that the cause of the blaze was under investigation.
Sorry to read this as I heard heard that the pub was improving. For too long that has been a desolate stretch.
A fantastic pub with excellent food, so beautifully done up I hope it can return as my favourite local soon.
