Brighton artist David Shrigley has given his Thumbs Up to the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, London.
The 20ft high bronze-cast sculpture is the 11th work of art to be displayed on the plinth.
The “positivity and humour” of Shrigley’s exaggerated Thumbs Up sculpture won praise from the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan. He said that it captured “the spirit of London”.
Shrigley said: “It’s a work about making the world a better place.”
He admitted that it was “a ridiculous proposition” but added: “It’s a good proposition.”
Among the previous works to have been displayed on the plinth was a statue of a Brighton University graduate “Alison Lapper Pregnant” by Marc Quinn 11 years ago.
