Dozens of environmentalists stripped off for an eye catching beach clear up yesterday to highlight marine pollution – and attempt to get into the Guinness Book of Records.

A total of 25 people turned up to take off their clothes at Black Rock Beach, picking up nine bags containing 45kg of rubbish from the shingle.

The event, organised by the World Cetacean Alliance and the Brighton Naked Bike Ride, could now become an annual fixture.

Event co-organiser Russell Arnott (outreach officer for WhaleFest: Incredible Oceans) said: “It was a great day; the sun was shining, the sea was like a millpond and everyone that took part did so with passion in their hearts and a smile on their face.

“While we’re still analysing the data, as suspected we found loads of bottle lids, wet wipes, straws and pieces of fishing net.”

Nick Sayers (organiser of Brighton Naked Bike Ride) said: “It really was a lot more fun than I thought it was going to be. But this event has kicked started something; we’re definitely going to try to run this every year.”

The event was organised to coincide with the Marine Conservation Society’s Great British Beach Clean weekend and the debris was sorted and logged in order to accumulate data about marine litter around the UK.

Cass and Mark from Cityclean provided bags, gloves and litter pickers for the event.

What an amazing thing to do. Well done for clearing up the rubbish and for drawing attention to the cause. Beautiful people of Brighton.

Good point Babble. Your comment won’t make even the tiniest positive impact on environmental issues
