More drink drivers from Brighton and Hove have been sentenced for getting behind the wheel after boozing, Sussex Police said today (Thursday 18 August).
Shaun Whelan, 29, a carpenter, of Westbourne Villas, Hove, was arrested in nearby Albany Villas, Hove, on Thursday 30 June.
Whelan was charged with driving with 95 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath and having no insurance. The drink drive limit is 35 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 28 July and was banned from driving for 36 months. He was also given a 16-week community order, fined £85 and ordered to pay an £85 victim surcharge.
Whelan is among a total of 102 drivers convicted since Sussex Police started its annual summer crackdown targeting drink and drug drivers. It ran from Monday 6 June to Sunday 10 July.
Wesley Twyman, 38, a sales representative, of Swanborough Drive, Whitehawk, was arrested in Sutherland Road, Brighton, on Saturday 11 June and charged with driving with 64 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Friday 29 July and was disqualified from driving for 17 months. He was also ordered to pay a £420 fine, £85 costs and a £42 victim surcharge.
Brygidia Storey, 35, a manager, of Rudyard Road, Woodingdean, was arrested in John Street, Brighton, on Saturday 25 June and charged with driving with 40 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of her breath.
She pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 10 August and, due to the short distance driven to park her vehicle securely, had her licence endorsed with six penalty points. She was also ordered to pay a £410 fine, £85 costs and a £41 victim surcharge.
Mike Ako, 22, a chef, of no fixed address, was arrested in Hanover Terrace, Brighton, on Friday 8 July. He was charged with driving with 56 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath and having no insurance.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 July and was banned from driving for 15 months. He was also ordered to pay a £300 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
Jakub Skowronski, 34, a courier, of Freshfield Road, Brighton, was arrested in Middle Street, Brighton, on Saturday 9 July, and charged with driving with 87 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath and having cannabis.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 July and was disqualified from driving for 22 months. He was also ordered to pay a £350 fine, £85 costs and a £30 victim surcharge.
Brian McArdle, 52, a joiner, of Cromwell Road, Hove, was arrested in Wilbury Villas, Hove, on Saturday 9 July and charged with driving with 99 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 July and was banned from driving for two years. He was also ordered to carry out 80 hours of unpaid work in the next 12 months and pay £85 costs and a £85 victim surcharge.
Robert Manila, 23, a builder, of Anzac Close, Peacehaven, was arrested in Pelham Rise, Peacehaven, on Sunday 10 July. He was charged with driving with 62 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of his breath and driving with no insurance.
He pleaded guilty at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 July and was banned from driving for 18 months. He was also ordered to pay a £346 fine, £85 costs and a £35 victim surcharge.
