A person has died after a fire in a basement flat in Upper St James’s Street last night.
A fire investigation has now been launched by Sussex Police into the cause of the blaze, which broke out at shortly before 1.50am in the early hours of this morning.
A police spokesman said: “At 2.05am, Sussex Police were contacted by East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service to a report of a fire in a flat in Upper St James’s Street. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.”
A spokeswoman for East Sussex Fire and Rescue said: “We were called to the scene at 1.49am. We sent crews from Roedean, Hove and Preston Circus with an officer. It was a fire in a basement.”
