An 82-year-old fundraiser arrived in Brighton at the weekend for the final leg of a marathon effort to support research into suicidal depression.
Diana Gair has walked the 615-mile Monarch’s Way which follows the route of the royal escape by King Charles II in 1651 after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester.
The king fled from England to France aboard a coal brig called the Surprise – later renamed the Royal Escape – leaving from Shoreham after spending a night in West Street in Brighton.
Diana Gair, of Romsley Hill Grange, Romsley, near Halesowen, in the West Midlands, said: “There are so many people who are suffering or who know somebody or have a friend or relation who are suffering (from suicidal depression).
“I had a friend who was suffering. She was trying to starve herself. I fed her for a year.”
She started the long walk four years ago and hopes to raise £100,000 in £500 tranches. To donate or to see her Just Giving page, click here.
