The Albion are unsurprisingly out of the FA Cup after losing to a first-half Robert Snodgrass penalty.
Both teams made up to seven changes from their last league outing.
Danny Holla and Adam Chicksen could very well have both played their last Albion match. The pair started the match but failed to impress.
Finnish goalkeeper Niki Meanpaa made a rare Seagulls appearance and made some good saves.
The home team’s goal came after Lewis Dunk upended Harry Maguire in the penalty area and Snodgrass calmly slotted the spot kick home.
In the second half Kazenga LuaLua and Sam Baldock both made their long awaited returns from injury.
Baldock went closest to restoring parity.
Andrew Crofts also had a good chance to force a replay near the end.
Both Liam Ridgewell and Richie Towell had good solid debuts for the club.
Albion travel back to Yorkshire on Tuesday (12 January) to take on Rotherham United in the Championship.
