A signal failure has been fixed but Brighton and Hove commuters still face long delays on their train journey home this evening (Tuesday 15 December), Network Rail has warned.
The track and infrastructure owner said: “In reaction to a fault with the signalling equipment in the Purley Oaks area, Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express services are subject to severe disruption.
“Though the signalling issues have now been fixed, the affected area remains heavily congested with many services still severely being delayed.
“This fault occurred at a particularly busy time and a number of trains have been delayed further due to drivers and conductors being displaced and unable to get to their next train on time.
“The trains have also been left out of position for their normal journeys making them unavailable for their next workings.”
Train operators were accepting each other’s tickets where appropriate, Network Rail said, adding: “We are sorry for the delay to your journey today.”
