Pilot Andy Hill was thrown clear of his jet aircraft when it crashed at Shoreham.
But accident investigators do not know whether he ejected or whether his ejector seat was activated on impact.
Two cockpit cameras filmed the flight but the vintage Hawker Hunter was not fitted with a black box flight recorder.
And no flight path information was recovered from the aircraft GPS.
The controls were responding to the pilot throughout the flight, investigators found.
Their preliminary findings were released in an interim report today (Friday 4 September) by the Air Accidents Investigation Branch.
Eleven people died when the Hunter crashed on the A27 during the Shoreham airshow on Saturday 22 August.
The report was published in a special bulletin by the AAIB days after an inquest into the 11 deaths was opened and adjourned.
Mr Hill, 51, remains in hospital. His condition is serious but stable.
