A higher proportion of students achieved good GCSE results at Cardinal Newman Catholic School this year.
Pupils were finding out their results this morning (Thursday 20 August) at the school, in The Upper Drive, Hove.
The school said: “Cardinal Newman Catholic School has seen students achieve excellent GCSE exam results this year with an increase to 65.3 per cent of students achieving at least five A* to C grades including English and mathematics.
“Twenty five students gained 10 or more A* or A grades. In fact, over 25 per cent of all grades awarded to our students were A or A*.
“Particular congratulations to Sheherezade Scott who achieved 10 A* grades at GCSE level and an A grade at AS Level in philosophy and ethics and Alejandro Rivas Torres who achieved 12 A*/A grades at GCSE.
“Ash Holland, James Carbis, Jasmine Gregory and Ellie O’Brien all received 11 A*/A grades at GCSE.”
Cardinal Newman head James Kilmartin said: “We are absolutely thrilled with these results and delighted for the students and their families.
“I am sure they would join me in wanting to acknowledge the hard work, the skill and the knowledge of the teaching and other staff who have helped them to achieve so highly.”
Dr Kilmartin added: “We now look forward to supporting our students in the next stage of their education and welcoming many of them back to our sixth form – Newman College.”
The school said that the highlights this year included
99.4 per cent of students gained at least one GCSE
44 per cent of students gained the English Baccalaureate or EBacc (an increase of 7 percentage points)
Over 75 per cent of students gained five or more A* to C grades
Nearly 30 per cent of students achieved five or more A* or A grades
Just over one quarter of all results were A* or A grades
79.5 per cent of students gained a grade C or above in mathematics (an increase of 7 percentage points)
75 per cent of students gained a grade C or above in English language
80 per cent of students gained a grade C or above in English literature
80 per cent of students gained a grade C or above in humanities
