Cars, vans and lorries will be banned from two Brighton streets from today (Saturday 30 May).

East Street will be pedestrianised every weekend from today.

And Ship Street will be pedestrianised between North Street and Ship Street from 11am each day.

Brighton and Hove City Council said: “East Street will be pedestrianised on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 7pm under a trial scheme.

“The aim is to create a more pleasant environment for the thousands of shoppers and others who walk through the street at weekends.

“The trial will last for up to 18 months and during this time the council will monitor and assess its effect and make a decision whether to make the arrangement permanent at the end of the trial.

“Between 11am and 7pm no motor vehicles will be permitted in the pedestrianised section.

“Any motor vehicles remaining in the street will receive a penalty notice and will not be able to exit the area until 7pm.

“During these times the pedestrianisation restriction on Little East Street will be lifted to allow motor vehicles to exit the area. Cycling will continue to be permitted at all times.”

Objections can be made within six months of the relevant traffic order coming into force, which is Sunday 22 November.

Grrr, typical of Loony Labour and their mad anti-car policies, they’re destroying our city (etc etc)

(Did I get it right? 😉

Ten days in, and Labour appears to be converting to Green policies.

it will be curious to see the reaction of the “we-don’t-want-any-change” bridge to which Labour pandered during the Election.

What about disabled drivers who’s money is I presume as welcome as others? I forsee a growth in sales of bolt croppers to those vehicle owners trapped by this stupidity.

Well, we shall see whether Labour reverses this! Look how it had to change its mind about objecting to 20 mph when it found that more residents around Preston Park in fact wanted 20 mph…

As for the rest of your comment, you seem locked down into a life-defeating mentality: simply because one phase of life ends, that does not mean that life is over. If you are truly living, then each day is one of discovery and opportunity; I find it dismaying when people assume that every day should be the same: that way lies death-bed regrets. You need to think on that – and the passing time.

Living in France Rolivan has already taken to ferry into the sunset apparently.
