An election hustings in Brighton next week will focus on the environment and climate change.
The event, modelled on the BBC Question Time programme’s format, is due to take place at the Brighthelm Centre, in North Road, Brighton, on Tuesday (14 April).
The debate is entitled “The Future of Our Planet – Which party do you trust?”
Five of the candidates for Brighton Pavilion are taking part, including Caroline Lucas, who was elected to represent the seat as the country’s first Green MP five years ago.
She will be joined on the panel by Purna Sen (Labour), Clarence Mitchell (Conservative), Chris Bowers (Liberal Democrat) and Nigel Carter (UKIP).
Brighthelm trustee Geoff Barnard said: “It will provide local people with an opportunity to grill the candidates.
“Which party do you trust to come up with effective policies on climate change and lead the UK delegation to the crucial climate talks in Paris in December?
“For example, what is their position on fracking, nuclear power and wind farms?
“Here’s a chance to hear the arguments first hand and make up your mind where to place your vote on election day.”
Ollie Pendered, from the event’s co-sponsor, Community Energy South, said that he was keen to hear the candidates’ views on energy policy.
He said: “I want to know how far the parties are prepared to go to stimulate and empower our local communities to produce and manage our energy needs locally and to loosen the grip of the ‘Big 6’ energy suppliers.”
Younger voters will be especially welcome on the night, the organisers said.
Barbara Lambert, a Brighthelm intern and recent Sussex University graduate, said: “I hope this event will help encourage first-time voters to engage in the political process and gain a better understanding of the local candidates’ stance on environmental issues.”
The hustings is a ticket-only event, with tickets available online and at the Brighthelm reception for £5 or £3 for concessions. Tickets will be available on the door.
Participants will be invited to pick up a slip from the “Ask a question” desk on the night to be considered for the final shortlist.
The debate will also take place online using the hashtag #electionQT on Facebook and Twitter.
The Brighthelm bar will open at 7pm on Tuesday, with a 7.30pm deadline to submit questions and an 8pm start to the debate.
It will be chaired by Simon Maxwell, a climate change expert and former director of the Overseas Development Institute.
