A man has died after jumping into the sea from the Palace Pier in Brighton.
The RNLI Brighton lifeboat crew members tried to revive the man giving him heart-lung resuscitation (CPR – or cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
The Brighton RNLI said: “Yesterday (Saturday 7 March) at 6.04pm Brighton Lifeboat were tasked by Solent Coastguard after reports of a person jumping off Brighton Pier.
“A crew was quickly assembled and the lifeboat made best speed to Brighton Pier where the casualty was quickly located and brought aboard Brighton Lifeboat.
“The crew began CPR on the casualty while the lifeboat headed back to Brighton Marina where shore crew from Brighton Lifeboat were ready to take over.
“South East Coast Ambulance were soon to arrive and the casualty was handed over in to their care.
“The casualty was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and Brighton Lifeboat was stood down at 7.19pm.”
The man was pronounced dead at the Royal Sussex.
