Brighton and Hove City Council members failed to set a budget this evening and will reconvene on Tuesday (3 March).
The meeting at Hove Town Hall today was an echo of last year’s proceedings when it proved impossible to broker a compromise at the first attempt.
At just after 10.30pm the council chief executive Penny Thompson said: “I’m sorry that people have been kept so long and it looks as though we are going to be unable to reach an agreement this evening.
“My proposal is that we should adjourn the meeting and reconvene.”
Councillors wanted more time to study a compromise motion able to command majority support.
Many members were upset that they would be coming back at 4pm on Tuesday as some had expected to return on Thursday (5 March).
Officials are keen to agree a budget by the legal deadline of Sunday 8 March and to meet the deadline for printing and billing.
