EDL has called on its members to hold a demonstration in Brighton on Saturday, April 18 – reportedly to fill the void left by the March for England.
The far-right organisation named Brighton as one of three places it is holding national demonstrations this spring.
The announcement was met with sadness by StopMFE (Stop March for England).
Writing on its blog, it said: “StopMFE are disappointed that the EDL have decided to bring their drunken, racist caravan to Brighton.
“In previous years, Brightonions have risen to the occasion brilliantly in successfully seeing off the March for England with colourful mass demonstrations and blockades.
“We call on all the vibrant communities of Brighton to unite and stop the EDL’s message of hate.”
Last year’s nationalist March for England resulted in several arrests after violence broke out between the marchers and anti-fascist counter protesters.
One brawl, which saw chairs, tables and glasses flung by both sides towards each other outside the Dorset Street Bar in North Road, was caught on camera and put on YouTube:
Last month, thirteen people were remanded to crown court to face charges associated with the march.
