A body has been found in the search for two Brighton men swept out to sea in the early hours of this morning (Saturday 10 January).
Sussex Police said: “A body, probably of one of the men swept to sea at Brighton, has been discovered on the beach at Saltdean this afternoon.
“A member of the public found the body at 2.25pm and the body is currently being recovered from the scene. Formal identication has yet to take place.”
Detective Chief Inspector Carwyn Hughes said: “This is a tragic incident and we are supporting the families involved.
“The body recovered on the beach is likely to be one of the two men and we are doing all we can to find the other with coastguard further involved.”
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency urged members of the public not to go into the water if they see anything, but to dial 999 and ask for the coastguard.
Ian Guy, UK Coastguard Controller, said: “Following last night’s incident off Brighton beach, many members of the public have come to the scene.
“While we understand that people want to help, it is vital that no one attempts to enter the water.
“If you see anything which you might think is related to the search, dial 999 and report it to the coastguard.”
