One of Brighton’s busiest roads has been closed to cars, lorries and buses after a gas leak at or near a petrol station.
Lewes Road, at the Vogue Gyratory, was closed, causing big queues after traffic had earlier been held up by surface flooding along the road.
A travel alert to drivers said: “A270 Lewes Road both ways closed due to gas leak at Newmarket Road / Bear Road / Hollingdean Road.”
At about 10.30am an updated alert said: “Queueing traffic and two lanes closed due to gas leak on A270 Lewes Road both ways at Newmarket Road / Bear Road / Hollingdean Road.
“Following a gas leak at a petrol station Lewes Road is down to a single lane in the gyratory.
“The road was fully closed for a time but now one lane is open.”
The roadworks there have affected bus journeys for a while and Brighton and Hove Buses said: “There are ongoing roadworks at the Vogue Gyratory along the Lewes Road, with several road closures.
“This is causing severe traffic congestion in the area, especially in the morning and evening peaks.
“We have been experiencing delays of up to an hour on bus journeys along this route at these particular times.”
