Brentford 3 Brighton & Hove Albion 2
The Seagulls returned to league
action after the international break but were beaten at Griffin Park.
Moses Odubajo opened the scoring for Brentford on 18 minutes, then Andre Gray doubled the Bees’ advantage just after the half hour.
But five minutes before half time captain Gordon Greer pulled a goal back for Albion. He scored again minutes later but the strike was disallowed after a foul by Lewis Dunk.
Dunk was replaced at half time by Aaron Hughes.
Ten minutes into the second half Jonathan Douglas appeared to put the match beyond any doubt as he slammed home Jake Bidwell’s cross.
The match was almost end to end, then Danny Holla scored a superb curling effort, his first Albion goal, to make the score 3-2.
But Albion couldn’t level despite a clear chance for Joe Bennett and a last-minute volley from keeper David Stockdale from a Holla corner, making what seemed like a cameo “striker” appearance during injury time.
Albion drop to 17th in the Championship and face in-form Ipswich at Portman Road on Tuesday (16 September ) before beleaguered Blackpool at the Amex the following Saturday (20 September).
