A man and woman who were robbed for pocket change escaped their muggers when a Brighton family helped them into their garden.
The 20-year-old victims were sitting on a bench at Duke’s Mound when they were approached at about 8.30pm on Thursday 31 July by two men.
The men became aggressive and ordered the victims to give them their money and mobile phones, Sussex Police said.
The 20-year-old man was punched in the face and gave the thieves 30p before the victims were helped into a garden by a family.
Police issued an appeal for witnesses to the attack today. Detective Constable Gemma Holley said: “As they fled from the men, the victims were helped by a family who allowed them to enter the private garden close to Lewes Crescent.
“We are trying to identify this family as they could be able to help us with our investigation.
“If you know who they are or have any information about what happened, please contact us.”
Scott Cavanagh, 31, of Spruce Court, Salford, and Jack Bonnet, 23, of no fixed address, have been charged with robbery and attempted robbery. Both are due to appear at Lewes Crown Court on Thursday 28 August.
