More student housing is set to be built at the old Buxtons shop in Ditchling Road.
Brighton and Hove City Council officers are recommending that plans to knock down the store and replace it with 58 student rooms are approved.
The store has been closed since 2009, and has provided the canvas for ambitious graffiti murals, such as this Star Wars one painted by Paul Barlow in 2010.
The new four-storey halls of residence will also include a wheelchair accessible room, a warden’s room, two supervisors’ rooms, kitchens, cycle parking and refuse and recycling areas.
The new scheme is popular locally, with 32 letters of support sent to the council following a consultation.
They said it would improve the area and boost the London Road economy.
The council’s planning committee are due to hear the application tomorrow. You can read the full report here.
I support the building of further student accommodation on Ditchling Road an empty retail unit does nothing to boost the economy of Brighton, but students do boost the economy.
Properly regulated, the student population of Brighton does a lot of good
