Two girls singing while swimming off Peacehaven beach prompted 999 calls from onlookers who thought they were in distress.
Newhaven Coastguard was called out at 8.14pm tonight by a member of the public who said two girls were screaming for help.
But while they were en route, the first caller rang back to say the girls had made it safely back.
After talking to the girls, it transpired one of them had developed cramp and so they had started singing to take her mind off it.
A spokesman for the coastguard said in a post on Facebook: “They were not contenders for X factor.”
He added: “They were ashore and were safe and well so we gave some advice and returned to station.”
