Hove rooftop seagull feeder angers neighbour

Like ’em or loathe ’em, not many people would actively go about attracting seagulls to roost on top of their home.

But one Hove resident is doing just that by feeding them from their rooftop – to the disgust of at least one of their neighbours.

A report on FixMyStreet urges the council to do something about it.

It reads: “A resident of Wilbury Grove is constantly feeding seagulls from their roof top.

“This has now attracted over three chicks roosting in the rooftop and countless additional adult gulls to the area.

“I appreciate that gulls are a necessary evil of seaside life but their exacerbated numbers in one small area have increased noise and the amount of excrement.

“The adult gulls can also be quite aggressive at times.

“My concern is also the presence of foods scraps will encourage other vermin such as rats to the vicinity.

“I would like for the council to discourage active feeding of the gulls and encourage residents to ensure their rubbish is properly secured.”

A council spokesman was not able to provide details of the incident reported. But he said: “Brighton and Hove City Council’s strategy for dealing with issues relating to seagulls and pigeons is to concentrate on their food sources.

“Our highways enforcement team issue fixed penalty fines to businesses that litter the streets with commercial food waste.

“Our environmental health department ensure that businesses have adequate waste storage facilities.

“Our recycling and rubbish team have introduced communal bins in many more areas in the city centre, meaning that most areas of Brighton and Hove have their refuse contained, before it is put out for collection.

If seagulls or pigeons are causing a nuisance, then it is the responsibility of the homeowner or occupier to ensure that the property has proofing. The most effective methods are netting and spikes.

“Private pest control companies that specialise in bird proofing can be contacted to help with this.”

So, someone feeding the gulls isn’t a food source for the gulls??

This is an outrageous act of vandalism.
Attracting seagulls to nest only encourages their psychotic tendencies this individual should face the full force of the law and be banned from the street for life…

I think John Salmon’s views are rather strong.
We should give this man more sympathy. He is probably one of those Dr Doolittle eccentric types, whose only friends are Seagulls.
He probably doesn’t have a wife and children to communicate with.

Luckily we don’t have elephants in Hove or this idiot would be feeding and encouraging those also. Inconsiderate and selfish behaviour like this is unacceptable in a seaside town. We should poison all the gulls and pigeons, clear the beaches and sea if crabs, fish and jellyfish so we can get on with enjoying our city without all that flora and fauna nonsense. Makes my blood boil, jail him.

One is simply appalled by this behaviour . We are people of hove hove, therefore we are civilised. This behaviour is the complete and utter juxtaposition people like this don’t deserve to live in the upper classes let alone released into the public eye. Whomever this complete stranger is they probably have other anti social characteristics such as bad dress sense and an overly loud mannerism. Burn the seagull lovers at the stake, that’s what I’d say !!!

Frankly I find the views expressed disgustingly restrained. Clearly symptomatic of the Green virus that permeates this seaside hovel. Seagulls are vermin and those that voluntarily feed them are a bloody disgrace to the regiment and should have their necks rung!
I clearly remember my Wallah Wallah recommending a curry recipe for seagull feeders. Generally needed the dessicated entrails of some simpering bog a wallah. Needless to remark in the PC contaminated hovel of Hove-By-The-Slum such a fine dish would be outlawed!

In my day when the Raj was still fit for English men, this sort of behaviour would be discussed once the ladies had retired and the men had a good cigar.
It is typical of the feral society we now are that BogaWallahs such as this seagull feeder believe they can live amongst decent people whilst satisfying their dispicable predatory urges. Seagulls are flying rats the bane of society, horse whip this wallah!

Trust me he is harmless. We need people who care for these usually unloved seagulls.
Although I agree that food put out for birds can attract rats I do not think they can get onto rooftops.
I am distressed that his friends and even his family are not putting in a word of support.

In response to ‘Mother’, if indeed this man has a family, just consider the emotional torture on them when he spends more time with his ‘friends’ the seagulls than them.
This hobby may seem harmless, but the emotional scarring on his family must be irreparable.

When I visited recently I did not detect any damage to his family they seemed perfectly happy to me. Now that his children are growing up and are quite independent they do not need feeding. However now the holidays are here he will be able to have counselling.I think you all should be more sympathetic.

I have a large collection of seagulls on my roof but they are quite handy as the dispose of my used ketamine and cocaine wraps. It does get them jolly batey though if there are any leftovers in there.
