Commuters are facing long delays on the journey home to Brighton and Hove after Victoria Station was closed this afternoon (Monday 16 July).
There were no trains in and out of the London station while the emergency services and specialists dealt with a gas leak in the Battersea Park area.
Trains are running again now but the timetable is in disarray and delays of up to 80 minutes were predicted.
The main train company for Brighton and Hove passengers, Southern, carried an alert on its website.
It was headed: “Major delays to and from London Victoria until further notice.”
The update said: “There is a gas leak in the Battersea Park area. Emergency services are on site dealing with the incident and have declared that is safe for trains to run past the affected location.
“Trains are now able to resume to and from London Victoria. However, trains are being delayed by up to 80 minutes.
“Passengers may use Southeastern, South West Trains, First Capital Connect, First Great Western, London Overground, London Midland, London Underground and Docklands Light Railway via any reasonable route.”
