The main Brighton seafront road has been closed after a large hole opened up this morning during the rush-hour.
Sussex Police said: “Police closed the A259 King’s Road, Brighton, shortly after 8am today (Friday 25 April) after a large hole appeared in the eastbound carriageway near the Fortune of War public house.
“It was discovered by workmen engaged in underground building work at the pub, which is near the junction with the A2010 West Street.
“Traffic diversions have been set up and mean that eastbound traffic is being diverted off the A259 Kingsway up the B2185 Grand Avenue and The Drive to join the A270 Old Shoreham Road. “Westbound traffic is being diverted from the Aquarium roundabout up the A23 via London Road to the Old Shoreham Road.”
Brighton and Hove City Council said: “Structural engineers are going down there now to assess the situation.”
Eighteen months ago the council started work on a £4 million three-year programme to strengthen the arches supporting the promenade and seafront road.
Further work is needed east of the Palace Pier where more deterioration has been identified.
Stay away it’s gridlocked. Over an hour from the grand hotel to west street.

Hello
I have just been caught up in the traffic mayhem due to the closure of Brighton seafront. Why is it that B right on police are apparently trained these days not to answer when asked the reason why? now I know it appears to be an entirely reasonable action but are police no longer trained to communicate with the public? Odd & a little sinister!

The Brighton ‘Hole of Excellence’. It’s the latest tourist attraction. You just watch, every town will have one soon. Can we blame Fracking for this or will it be UKIP?

“Be wary of he who would deny you access to information, for in his heart he dreams himself your master”
or something like that, someone said 😉
I think it would be wise for the police to take more effort to communicate with the public more clearly, it would help their image.

This disruption is giving the city a foretaste of what is in store if BHCC is allowed to borrow £36.2m to lend on to get the i360 built at the West Pier site. Months of very similar disruption along the coast road would be inevitable during its deep drilling and construction work.
The seafront road is indispensable to the smooth functioning or even basic functioning of the city.
Anyone wishing to message to the Public Works Loan Board that the i360 should not be given public money please sign this petition – every signature is notified to the PWLB and the loan has not been agreed – tinyurl.com/o9t76xh
If we had had a responsible council, over the last several Administrations, seafront revenues would not have been used elsewhere in the city, they would have gone straight into seafront maintenance and repair. BHCC could borrow from the PWLB to repair and regenerate our crumbling seafront…..the reason people come to the city. It is vital infrastructure and needed. The i360 is NOT.

This will affect the EDL march for England thing on Sunday as the sinkhole emerged at the exact spot they were due to assemble. I guess God isn’t a member.

Horrified!
Don’t do this to our beautiful Brighton. The coast road is a part of Brighton’s capital which is not on the cash balance sheets. It seems that the great value here is of no importance.

TIME to reflect on the Victorian sewers and foundations that hold GREAT Britain up . The funds , the managers , the committees ,the companies , the councils , the profits , the losses , the pensions , the public servants , the public ……… yet we ALL watch on as our EX GREAT Britain CRUMBLES into the sea due to LACK of investment AND being PROFIT driven . . as usual . This is THE number one problem in the UK … that it is ALWAYS someone else’s problem . Successive councils and governments NOT GIVING A MONKEYS ! policies based on polls . Damn the electorate . WHY oh why do we continue to put up with this treatment from those who we elect ? nice to see some of our brother humans actually prepared to DIE for what they believe in around the world , Syria , Ukraine etc etc . Most in England are too worried about their mortgage to worry about ANYONE else’s future , including their OWN . It’s ALL over , people . APATHY rules . sadly , but as always with luv , Lemme .

Never mind, Council workmen will be looking into it.

I’m proud to have the ‘Hole of Excellence’. It outclasses the other minor potholes which the rest of Sussex has to offer and is sure to draw crowds. Just think, this time in three years from now you too will be able to pay to view the hole from a privately owned tower which we allowed the Council to lend to a husband and wife team whose current company is bankrupt. Big Society at work there folks.
I just hope they’re grateful enough to send me a Godmas card in appreciation. They’ll probably be scanning retinas at the box office, so they should be able to trace me easily; a bit like the Eye of Sauron. I think Kitcat is an Elf.
