A 44-year-old man’s face was slashed in an attack on Brighton seafront.
The man, who comes from Brighton, was confronted by three men on steps leading up from Madeira Drive to Marine Parade, opposite Rock Place.
Sussex Police said: “The victim encountered three men, all black and around 5ft 6in, one of whom asked for a light for a cigarette. This was given and a brief talk ensued.
“But when the victim continued up the steps, one of the men who had been standing at the top grabbed his sleeve and tried to hold him back.
“This same man then swiped at his face with a shiny metal object, believed to have been a small knife.
“The victim broke free and was able to ask door staff at a nearby nightclub for help.
“He later received hospital treatment for cuts to his face and head.”
The attack happened at about 3.20am on Saturday 25 January.
A 19-year-old man from Portslade has been arrested on suspicion of assault causing grievous bodily harm and bailed until Monday 3 March while inquiries continue.
