Former Brighton and Hove City Council member Melanie Davis is the new chairman of the Brighton and Hove Labour Party.
She won a clear majority in a three-way contest with more than 100 people voting this morning (Saturday 11 May).
She represented Goldsmid ward in Hove until the local elections in May 2011.
Former chairman Adrian Morris remains a member of the local party’s Executive Committee. He was defeated along with party activist Greg Hadfield.
Her former fellow councillors are also preparing to choose a new leader after Gill Mitchell announced that she would not be seeking re-election.
Warren Morgan, who like Councillor Mitchell represents East Brighton ward, is expected to take over the role. A decision is due on Tuesday (14 May).
Anne Pissaridou is surely a front runner to be Leader of the Labour councillors. Curiously, at Thursday’s Council meeting, Anne Meadows – who has been cleared of whatever it was – sat apart from the other Labour councillors, in a different set of seats. Is she not returning to Labour? You might think that, I could not possibly comment.
Anne Pissaridou is a lovely lady and even for a first term councillor quite impressive and certain to be re-elected in Wish Ward. But experience is needed to lead a party and Warren Morgan is impressive in council meeting performance….almost as good a Gill.
Gill should not have stepped down….unless she is to bcome a PPC.
