Residents of a Hove road have asked for it to be turned into a “play street”.
Almost 150 people living in Westbourne Street signed a petition which was presented to the Brighton and Hove City Council Transport Committee this afternoon (Tuesday 30 April).
The petition, presented at Hove Town Hall, asked the council to “make the southern half of Westbourne Street a play street meaning vehicle access would be restricted to residents, their visitors and deliveries only and that traffic speed in the street would be reduced to a maximum of 10mph”.
Ray Cunningham, a resident who presented the petition, spoke about the unusual geography of the street and the desire to make it safer for children to play.
Councillor Graham Cox, one of the ward representatives and a member of the transport committee, asked to be briefed about the proposal.
Councillor Ian Davey, who chairs the committee, suggested that residents, ward councillors and officials liaise and take a collective look at the issue.
