A much-loved elm tree at the Seven Dials has been given a further reprieve until Tuesday 2 April.
Senior council officers confirmed on Friday (15 March) that no work would be done to the tree or the railings around it before then.
The tree in Vernon Terrace was due to have been chopped down at the beginning of March as part of changes to the Seven Dials roundabout.
Local residents and campaigners have been fighting since then to preserve the rare Wheatley elm.
A decision on the fate of the tree will be made at a meeting of Brighton and Hove City Council on Thursday 28 March.
The campaign group, Saveourtree.org, plan to present councillors with a petition to save the tree at this meeting.
The petition is available to sign online until Wednesday 27 March.
