A free five-hour cycling event is taking place on Hove Lawns this afternoon (Sunday 16 September).
The Summer of Cycling event is intended to be a fun way of promoting cycling and runs from noon to 5pm.
It comes after Bradley Wiggins’s triumph in the Tour de France and the success of Wiggins and his fellow British cyclists at the London 2012 Olympics.
Activities include “bike robot jousting” where those taking part make and decorate a suit of armour and then take to the lawns as “bike knights”.
The afternoon will culminate in a bike jousting demonstration.
Visitors can also have a go at the hay bale slalom. Twenty bales of hay will form an enormous course on Hove Lawns, a challenge for riders to weave around the bale obstacles without taking a tumble.
Other attractions include a free bike doctor, having a go on “whacky bikes”, bike maintenance training, spinning classes on static bikes and cycling lessons for anyone of any age needing help gaining confidence on a bike.
Visitors will also be encouraged to venture into other parts of Brighton and Hove to take part in a cycling “treasure hunt”.
Cycle hire is available so that anyone without their own bike wiill be able to take part.
There are cycling goodies up for grabs and anyone completing all the treasure hunt clues will be entered into a competition to win a new bicycle.
Councillor Ian Davey, chairman of the Brighton and Hove City Transport Committee, said: “After a summer of tournament success at home and abroad, cycling has never been so popular.
“This unique event is a great opportunity for new and experienced cyclists alike to come along, have a bit of fun and hopefully learn something new about cycling in the city.”
